Windows 11: How to Download and Install

This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough of how to download and install Windows 11 on your computer.

1. Download the Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)

Visit the official Microsoft website to download the Windows 11 ISO file:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

2. Create a Bootable Windows 11 USB Drive

You’ll need a USB drive (at least 8GB) and a tool like Rufus to create a bootable USB installer.

  • Download Rufus: Download the latest version of Rufus from: https://rufus.ie/downloads/
  • Run Rufus: Launch the Rufus application.
  • Select USB Drive: Plug your USB drive into your computer. Warning: All data on the USB drive will be erased.
  • Select ISO: In Rufus, click the “SELECT” button and navigate to the location where you saved the Windows 11 ISO file. Select the file and click “Open.”
  • Partition Scheme (Crucial Step): Choose the correct partition scheme based on your computer’s BIOS/UEFI firmware:
    • UEFI (Modern Computers): Select “GPT” as the partition scheme and “NTFS” as the file system. This is generally for computers with 6th generation Intel processors (or newer) and UEFI firmware.
    • BIOS (Older Computers): Select “MBR” as the partition scheme and “NTFS” as the file system. This is for older computers with traditional BIOS firmware.
  • Start the Process: Click the “START” button.
  • Confirmation: A warning message will appear. Click “OK” to proceed.
  • Wait: Rufus will now create the bootable Windows 11 USB drive. This process may take several minutes. Do not interrupt it.

3. Performing a Clean Installation of Windows 11

  • Boot from USB: Insert the USB drive into your computer. You’ll need to configure your computer’s BIOS/UEFI settings to boot from the USB drive. This usually involves pressing a key like Del, F2, F10, F12, or Esc during startup (the specific key depends on your motherboard manufacturer). Consult your computer’s manual if you’re unsure.
  • Windows Setup:
    • Language and Keyboard: Select your preferred language, time, and keyboard layout, then click “Next.”
    • Install Now: Click “Install now.”
    • Product Key: If you have a Windows 11 product key, enter it here. If not, click “I don’t have a product key.” You can activate Windows later.
    • Edition Selection: Select the desired edition of Windows 11 (e.g., Windows 11 Pro).
    • Accept License Terms: Accept the license terms and click “Next.”
    • Custom Installation (Clean Install): Choose “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).”
    • Partition Management (Data Loss!): This is a critical step. All data on the selected partition(s) will be erased.
      • Clean Install: If you want a completely clean install, delete all existing partitions on the drive where you want to install Windows. Select each partition and click “Delete.” Then, select the “Unallocated Space” and click “New” to create a new partition. Windows will create the necessary system partitions.
      • Multiple Drives: If you have multiple hard drives, be absolutely certain you are selecting the correct drive. Deleting the wrong partition can lead to data loss on other drives.
    • Select Installation Location: Select the partition where you want to install Windows 11 and click “Next.”
  • Installation: Windows will now begin the installation process. This may take some time, and your computer will restart several times. Do not interrupt the process.
  • Post-Installation Setup:
    • Region and Keyboard: After the installation is complete, your computer will restart. Select your region and keyboard layout.
    • Network Connection: Connect to your network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
    • Device Name: Give your computer a name.
    • Personal or Work/School: Choose whether you’ll be using the computer for personal use or for work/school.
    • Microsoft Account: You’ll be prompted to sign in with a Microsoft account or create one. You can also choose to create a local account.
    • Privacy Settings: Configure your privacy settings.

4. Post-Installation Tasks (Optional but Recommended)

  • Windows Update: Check for and install any available Windows updates.
  • Drivers: Ensure all your hardware drivers are installed (especially for your graphics card, network adapter, and chipset). You can usually download these from the manufacturer’s website.
  • Software Installation: Install your preferred applications.
